Student Advisor

Student advisors act as parents, mentors, tutors, and advocates to high school students at the Greater Chicago International Academy. These tasks are varied, such as helping with homework, providing rides, supporting English language learning, leading student activities, upholding student and organizational conduct standards, chaperoning trips, ensuring student safety, and connecting with students one-on-one. The Student Advisor position incorporates many responsibilities that are similar to what a Resident Assistant would take on in a traditional college environment. 

 

Qualified candidates must possess the following: 

  • Bachelor's Degree (or in progress)

  • Ability to lead groups of students with a positive attitude

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Sensitivity towards people from different cultures

  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record

 

Ideal candidates will possess some of the following attributes:

  • Experience learning a second language

  • Experience studying, travelling, or living abroad (especially in China)

  • Experience with teenagers

  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language

ELL Teacher

 

GCIA seeks teachers interested in preparing high school students from China for academic success and future study in US universities.

Successful candidates will:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in English / ESL with a TESL or ESL certificate or commensurate experience teaching foreign learners.

  • Love teaching and be extraordinarily good at it.

  • Love students and have high expectations for them daily.

  • Have experience in teaching high school students and/or expertise in working with English language learners.

  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and go the extra mile.

  • Be disciplined and organized in approach with students.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and collaboration in working with colleagues.

  • Have a positive, energetic, and adventurous spirit.

  • Be team players.

  • Have a strong commitment to global education.

  • Be familiar with the Common Core State Standards and standard based learning.

 

Our teachers will, among other initiatives, accomplish the following:

  • Demonstrate an understanding that a strong human connection with students enhances student learning.

  • Work collaboratively with teacher colleagues and school staff in shaping and maintaining a positive, structured, creative, and demanding environment for learning.

  • Be rigorous and relevant in course content and methodology.

  • Be able to work flexible hours to accommodate student needs & class schedules.

  • Be able to adapt lessons for students with various levels of English skills.

 

This position will begin as a part-time position and expand quickly to full-time with student demand.
