Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is GCIA?

The Greater Chicago International Academy (GCIA) is a new, innovative, residential school for Chinese students studying at American high schools. By partnering with local private high schools, GCIA provides opportunities for students to develop their English skills and to learn about American culture through both classroom learning and interactive extra-curricular activities.

02

Where are GCIA students from?

All of the GCIA students are from China, especially from the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou.

03

How long do GCIA students plan to stay in the US?

The majority of the GCIA students plan to attend American high school for the remainder of their high school years and hope to receive a diploma at the conclusion of their stay. Many hope to extend their post secondary experience by attending a college in the United States as well. Most of the students usually arrive as freshman or sophomores and plan to be with us for 3 or 4 years.

04

What school activities do GCIA students participate in?

GCIA students are encouraged to participate in any co-curricular activities they might find an interest in. The more students are immersed into the school programs and offerings the sooner they begin to feel and function as “true” students within a school community. They are encouraged to participate in things they may have never tried before. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of activities at their schools, including sports, art, music, drama, and more.

What is life like for GCIA students in the dorm?

Life in the dorm is like life anywhere when lots of teenagers are around-- busy! Our dorm life is a mix of structured activities that aim to promote academic success (study halls, tutoring), fun, recreational activities (museums, outdoor activities, sporting events, game nights, etc.), and free time (to rest, study, socialize, go to the gym, shop, etc.). We have student advisors (SAs) who are at the dorm day and night to spend time with the students, support their learning, and act in a parent/mentor capacity. Our current SA to student ratio is about 1:2, and each SA has a “House” of about eight to ten students that they are particularly responsible to.
