Student Activities
Students participate in many activities in the dorm and at school, giving them the full American High School experience.
China Club
Study abroad is not only about learning other languages, cultures and manners but also about introducing our nation to people who may not be familiar with it. Studying abroad does not mean we do not love our country, but means loving our country even more. On behalf of other Chinese students at Guerin Prep High School, Jiaxin Zhu and Harry Li just did something extraordinary.
Guerin Prep has a “The Week Of Clubs” every year. There are about 30 clubs for students to sign up for. Of the many clubs - Debate Club, Book Club, French Club, Dancing Club, Running Club, Tech Club to name a few - the Chinese Club is a huge success. Thanks to the amazing work of its organizers Jiaxin and Harry, about 25 students at Guerin Prep signed up for it in its first year.
“It was a really fun experience for me working on getting the Club started and I’m looking forward to some fun club activities throughout the fall semester” Said Jiaxin. Harry and Jiaxin have also announced to club members that there will be t-shirts made with a Chinese Club logo on them. Fun activities include watching Chinese movies, reading Chinese books, listening to Chinese music… they want to focus more on Chinese pop culture. It’s exciting to see what the Chinese Club has to offer.
Homecoming
Homecoming a big part of the High School Experience in America. It usually happens in September or October. The week before is filled with fun activities that get everybody's spirits high. On Friday, the school holds a (very loud) Pep Rally. The job of the rally is to keep students excited about the up-coming Homecoming games and cheer up all team members. The final event is the dance. Everyone gets dressed up to dance the night away!
WIA vs. GCIA Basketball Game
In the spring of 2017, the first WIA vs. GCIA Basketball Game was held. Many GCIA students and staff traveled up to WIA to cheer on our team. Seven boys and one student advisor from GCIA competed in a fierce competition. After a long, close game, GCIA won!
Graduation
Graduation is always a bittersweet time of year. While we are proud of our seniors for doing well and graduating, we are also sad to see them go. Congratulations graduates! May your futures be bright!
Birthday Celebrations
Over the past years, we have built a strong GCIA community. We believe in helping each other and encouraging each other. We are peers, we are friends and most importantly we are family.
One of mangy things we do at GCIA is that we celebrate each other’s Birthday.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Guerin Prep had Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 18th. SAs Emmaline and Yanfei attended the event and spoke with the teachers of GCIA's students. During these conferences, parents and guardians speak one-on-one with teachers. They learn how their students are doing and create plans to help students improve.
GCIA spent the month of October covered in spooky decorations to get everyone into the spirit of Halloween. As October 31st approached, Yanfei and Miriam teamed up to show student how to carve jack o'lanterns - a Halloween tradition. Student snacked on caramel coated apples and candy as they created their masterpieces.
Happy Halloween!
Happy Holidays!
We hosted a Christmas party on December 17th. GCIA students and staff and Guerin Prep students and staff joined together to celebrate the end of the semester before finals started. Miriam planned and organized the event. Steven, Emmaline, and Stephanie also contributed food. Several family members also joined in the fun.
Sunday Kickoff
The highlight of American football is Superbowl Sunday. Each year, at the beginning of February, two of the best football teams face off. All across the country, people gather at Superbowl parties to enjoy the game and the commericals made especially for this day. SA Miriam decorated the Student Union and arranged for snacks so the student could learn about this American pastime.
Happy New Year!
新年快樂!
GCIA celebrated the Lunar New Year on Monday, February 4th. VP Stephanie brought dumplings and kimchi and all sorts of snacks for the students and staff to enjoy. Guerin Prep's President, Tom, visited, as did Yanfei and her family. Students, like Allen, Meddy, and Eric, had fun eating dumplings and celebrating the beginning of the year of the pig.
